Eton Fives - Wood Plate 2009

This year's tournament for the Wood Plate attracted the largest number of players since it formed the consolation tournament to the Adams Cup back in Blackfriars days.

Some 18 players and six spectators saw a new name emerge to be engraved on the trophy. Rob Cooper - son of veteran club member David - partnered former half-blue Bobby Friedman to six wins out of seven.

Taking part this year were Adams Cup holder David Cooper; Rob Cooper and Bobbie Friedman, conveniently next to each other alphabetically; Nick Gill; John Gee-Grant; Roman Heindorff; Stephen Kelly; Aidan Kong; Max Luck-Hille, back from his travels; Stephen Mullin; Robin Nagy, who came all the way from Australia to play, which might just be a record for effort; Alex Nice; Jonny Powell; Mark Stockton; John Reynolds; Dan Rose; vice-president of the game's governing body, the Eton Fives Associaiton, Gordon Stringer; and current president of John Carpenter Club Bruce Todd.

Curiously, Max Luck-Hille was drawn for the third time in a row in Old Citizen tournaments with club captain John Reynolds. They had won both the Wood Plate and Adams Cup together but this time around they were unable to repeat their previous success.

The solid silver plate, donated by Old Citizen Tom Wood, is competed for each year by Old Citizens and their guests, often to mark the beginning of the season. The Adams Cup will be held next May or June, pretty much at the end of the season.
