The Autumn Meeting – 2019
Venue: Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club

The final get together of the society for this year was held at the prestigious golf club
situated at Deal, and was much enjoyed by everybody.

The course is steeped in history and developed one hundred and twenty years ago from
a nine hole course, to the 18 hole championship links venue that exists today.

After the golf some members to complete the experience with a overnight stay nearby.

The SUMMER MEETING

Venue:   Woking Golf Club – July 15th

We enjoyed a full 36 hole day at Woking with singles in the morning for the

John Carpenter Challenge Cup (off handicap), and the Spice Bowl (off scratch).

Adam Jones was in fine form and completed the par 70 course with a superb

round of 76, but he only just managed to beat Terry Bridle, who completed the

course with 77!

Terry however, won the John Carpenter Challenge Cup with a net score of 71.

In the afternoon we played a foursomes stableford. This resulted in another

triumph for Terry Bridle, this time partnered by Clive Howard with 40 points.

The CYRIL GRAY Competition

Venue:   Worplesdon Golf Club – June 27th

We were drawn to play Stoneyhurst in the first round, a tough draw, as Stoneyhurst

were beaten in last year’s semi-final. The result was as expected, so we then moved

on to the Plate competition where we met old foes, Kings Canterbury. Unfortunately,

they beat us again. We played on by entering a team in the Super Seniors event. The

combined age of the competitors for this must exceed 140 years, with a minimum

of one of the pair being older than 65. We thought that it would be a chance to give

a couple of our playing members another game. Kit Spencer and Greg Matthews

were chosen for the honour of representing us. On one of the hottest days of the

year, they played a pair from Amplethorp, and did us proud by playing some good

competitive golf.

The winners were Whitgift school with St. Paul’s in second place. Our pair were by

no means disgraced, and finished in a very creditable seventh place. Well done the

team!

News to come.

The date and venue for the Autumn Meeting has now been arranged.

On SEPTEMBER 17th we shall be at the excellent Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club.

The club is rated as the seventh in England.

Versus the School 2019

WEDNESDAY JUNE 26th

Our golfers managed to play a match against the School this year, where four

boys were joined by five masters to make up a side representing the CLS school team.

Last year there was no match, but prior to that we played for the Law-Robertson Cup.The cup has gone missing, but the master in charge, Jono Santry, hopes to be able to trace its whereabouts.

We managed to beat the boys, but the Masters, who aren’t really part of the match, had the highest aggregate score! It is a pity we do not have many golfers at the school, and have difficulty in unearthing any who might play the game. Hopefully we might see the re-introduction of golf lessons at the School, and Jono will support any JCC sponsored activities.

Halford Hewitt 2019

We were drawn to play King Edward’s Birmingham in the first round. They are not regarded as one of the strong sides in the competition so we had some chance of getting through the first round. However, although one pair managed to win, we were comfortably beaten 4-1. Our opponents lost to Ampleforth 5-0 in round two. We duly played in the Princes Plate, and were drawn to play Cranleigh. The result was we were knocked out in the first round again 3-0.
