2016 Report

The Old Citizens Golfing Society continues to thrive in 2016. This year our fixture list included the  Halford Hewitt Cup at Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club in early April. We were drawn against one of the stronger teams, Marlborough, and lost 4 games to 1. In the Plate Competition at Prince’s Golf Club we lost to Trent school although we came close to beating them. We hope for better luck next year in both the draw and matches. Mark Stockton has been elected to serve on the Public Schools Golfing Society committee, the first time the OCs have been represented on the Committee since his father Vernon was elected around 30 years ago!

Our Spring meeting was held again at Worplesdon, one of Surrey’s best courses and always in good condition. It also provides us with some additional practice for the Cyril Gray Competition held at the same venue in late June. Paul Marsh won the Pollard Cup again withy second place going to Terry Bridle our Society Captain for 2016-7. The Spring Meeting was a success with 18 players enjoying the course this year.

We organised a match against the School at Wanstead Golf Club in June. The Old Citizens managed to retain the Law Robertson Bowl presented many years ago for this fixture. Tom Ross and Adam Jones (who is a member at Wanstead) played for us so Adam’s local knowledge certainly helped. We hope to unearth more golfing talent in the school and this is one of the best ways of achieving that aim.

The Cyril Gray tournament at Worplesdon past uneventfully, and resulted in narrow defeats in both round 1 and the Plate. As our Society membership ages we have a larger pool of eligible players from which to pick a team!

The Summer Meeting was held again at Swinley Forest Golf Club. The Spice Bowl was won by our Captain
Terry Bridle with a gross score of 73 and the John Carpenter Cup for the best nett score (71) was won by Stuart Courtney.

The Captain’s Day on the 2nd September will be held at The Nevill Golf Club Tunbridge Wells. We shall be playing for the Centurion Trophy kindly donated by the Stockton Family. Further details can be obtained from the Secretary.

We do extend a warm welcome to all Old Citizens to our golf days. You do not need to be a member of a club or have a recognised handicap but a reasonable level of golfing ability would be helpful.

Please contact the Secretary for details.
