Eton Fives - Adams Cup 2009

Cooper triumphs again fifty years on

JCC president Bruce Todd, centre, presents the trophy to Les Jacobs, left, and David Cooper, right If proof were needed that Eton fives is a game for life, this year's Adams Cup provides it. Fifty years after David Cooper last won the Old Citizens's trophy, he did so again on Saturday, May 23, this time partnered by the relatively youthful Les Jacobs.

David, 69, and Les, 43, emerged undefeated after taking on all-comers in the competition, in which half the contestants are seeded and then their partners chosen at random.

They scored key victories against Johnny Powell and John Reynolds and then Alex Nice and John Gee-Grant. It was the second time that David and Les had each triumphed, David in 1959 and Les in the mid-1990s.

Sporting the club's new red-and-white colours, a dozen of us gathered at Highgate to compete for the solid-silver trophy, first presented in 1928.

We will be holding a competition for the Wood Plate as a season opener in the autumn. Anybody interested in playing, or getting some practice in during the summer, should contact John Reynolds at [email protected]. We play mainly at the Westway courts near Latimer Road tube station and at Highgate.
