Christmas Message

It is not difficult to feel rather gloomy about the future but I do feel that this gloom can act in the way of a self fulfilling prophecy. Certainly, all my gloom was dispersed by a recent visit to CLS Girls School to see a joint production with CLS of the musical “Grease”.

It was a wonderfully exuberant evening with an excellent cast and supporting band. It reminded me that when I was at School in the 1970s things were pretty gloomy with IRA bombs, the Cold War at its height and economic woes of the most awful kind. Commentators were then, as now, predicting apocalyptical outcomes which as a teenager largely passed me by. I felt little but optimism for life ahead and I felt the same infectious optimism at CLS Girls.

So as Christmas and the New Year approaches I hope that some confidence and optimism can be reignited. 2012 will be an important year for the UK with The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics. Yes there is much to be concerned about, there usually is, but that should not stop acknowledging that there is still much to be thankful for.

Grease

After a short walk from CLS in company with Gary Griffin, I arrived in the Barbican for my first ever visit to the City of London School for Girls.

In those long ago days of my youth I do not recall the same level of interaction between the two institutions which clearly now enjoy very cordial relations.

The joint production of ‘Grease’ involved many CLS boys in singing parts. It really was a first class production, though the girls’ school sadly does not have a dedicated theatre.

An evening greatly enjoyed by all, following which Gary and I dined together which allowed me to gain a greater knowledge of the day to day rhythm of the school.

AGM 23 November 2011

I am delighted to take on the role of President and continue the tremendous work taken forward by past Presidents and Club Officials in recent years.

There is no doubt that the JCC has been transformed into a vibrant organisation which serves the School well. This support ranges from bursarships and careers advice to providing work experience through internships.

Relationships with the Head Master and the School simply could not be better, and in particular, the post of the Alumni Relations Officer has proved an outstanding success.

I consider my role to be a simple one: to continue to build on this substantial legacy, ensuring the JCC remains an integral part of School life, rather than a “before and after” as it was in the past.
