In my March 2010 letter, enclosed with the Spring Gazette, I set Old Citizens (and myself!) the challenge of raising sufficient money to fund a third Bursary.
A number of OCs very generously responded and we’ve just confirmed to the Headmaster that there will be sufficient funding for a new seven year half-Bursary. He will be using one of his sources of Matched Funding to top it up to a full Scholarship, and a boy will start at CLS in September 2011.
That means I have an opportunity to set another new challenge for myself, and of course for the JCC! Can I/we gather together sufficient support to fund a fourth half-Bursary – especially since David Levin, who is currently serving as Chairman of HMC, the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference, stated at their Conference that sixth-formers should be offered more funded places at private schools. (Full report at

To provide the necessary £6,500 a year requires just forty four OCs to agree to pay as little as £10 a month for seven years. For every pound you give we now get an additional 25 pence from the Gift Aid tax credit and the Headmaster then finds Matching Funds to take your £1 up to £2.50.
Members who would prefer to make a lump sum contribution could give a multiple of £840 (seven years at £10 a month), and those who prefer annual payments could give multiples of £120 (twelve months at £10). Of course any other amount will also be most appreciated.
Contributing to a Bursary is one of the most valuable ways we OCs can give something back to our School. This is particularly true if you were yourself in receipt of a Scholarship or Bursary when you attended CLS. Without the generosity of previous benefactors, or even the ratepayer (sadly no longer contributing), you would not now be reaping the benefit of a CLS education.
